Spain is one of the large European market for smartphone manufacturers. The country enjoys a high smartphone penetration rate. The saturation for smartphones in Spain was achieved in 2017, where the smartphone sales saw year-on-year decline.
The detrimental factor for slow smartphone sales in the country lies in lack of innovative features from the manufacturers. The smartphone users in the country are happy to extend the life of their existing smartphone; in an event where they are not getting any significantly better feature for a hefty sum. Currently, the smartphone penetration in the country stands at 92%, making it one of the highest penetrated markets of the world.
In terms of smartphone market share, Apple was able to recover some lost ground from rivals, after launch of iPhone X. Prior to the launch, iPhone sales showed negative growth in Spanish smartphone market. The company has been able to increase its sale in Spain with an exquisitely featured iPhone X.
Apart from APPLE, Samsung remains one of the top players in Spanish smartphone market. Samsung leads the pack for Android based smartphones in the country. Samsung Galaxy S8 was one of the bestselling smartphones in the country. Now, with the launch of Samsung Galaxy S9, and Galaxy S9 Plus, the company is expecting to gain more traction for its devices. Furthermore, the reason for Samsung dominance in Spanish smartphone industry is the large portfolio of smartphones retained by Samsung across all price brackets. This gives the company an edge to dominate the market.
In terms of feature phones, Microsoft España was able to gain top position. The company snatched the top spot from Samsung, and LG for domination in feature phone class. The once glorious Nokia was also able to gain some momentum in Spanish feature phone market with the launch of its redesigned Nokia 3310.
Well, the market is still showing slowing down in terms of smartphone sales in the country. The high penetration rates, and refurbished devices are few reason why we could predict a slow sales volume in the country for coming year. However, as evident from first quarter in 2018, high-end premium smartphones with loads of features might just be able to attract customers’ attention in Spanish smartphone industry.
