What is the Moto G42?

The Moto G42 is the latest addition to Moto’s budget G series line of smartphones. It is a reliable budget-conscious smartphone that’s a good fit for first-time smartphone buyers. The G series has always been about providing reliable budget options for smartphone users. Over the past few years, we’ve seen multiple additions to this series with each iteration improving on its predecessor. The latest addition to the G series is the Moto G42, the successor to the Moto G40. While the Moto G40 was a decent option, the G42 brings with it some much-needed upgrades.

Available Variants

There are two variants of the Moto G42: The 3GB RAM with 32GB storage and the 4GB RAM with 64GB storage. There’s also a 3GB RAM with a 32GB storage variant of the G42 Play that has a plastic back instead and shares many of the G42’s specs. The base version of the G42 has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, but it is not recommended because 2GB might not be enough for multitasking. We recommend that you get the 3GB variant with 32GB of storage as it offers more value for money for just an extra $10.

Design and Build Quality

The Moto G42 (and the G42 Play too) has a generic design that’s nothing out of the ordinary. The device comes with a plastic back and an all-black design. It has a water-repellent nano-coating that protects it against splashes though not immersion in water. The device comes with a fingerprint scanner at the back and is available in a single color option: Black. The G42 is a compact device with a 5.7-inch HD+ Max Vision display. The display is good but not exceptional with a pixel density of about 312 PPI. The display is protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 panel that offers protection against minor scratches and scuffs. Overall, the design, while not exceptional or unique, is sleek and fits well in the hand thanks to its small bezels.

Software – Android OS v9.0 and more

The Moto G42 is powered by Android 9 Pie out of the box. It’s a stock version of Android and is one of the few devices that offer this experience. The G42 is also part of the Android One program which means that it will be among the first devices to receive Android Q and future Android updates. Another benefit of the Google-powered software is that you get a pure and secure experience that you usually get on a Pixel smartphone. It has no bloatware which is great for those who prefer a clean interface. The device comes with a few pre-installed apps, but you can uninstall them if you don’t plan to use them.

Camera – A Solid Shooter at this price point!

The Moto G42 houses a 13-megapixel primary camera with f/2.0 aperture and auto-focus. While the camera is not the best at this price point, it is a solid shooter. In good lighting conditions, the images turn out well with good colors. However, the pictures have a bit too much noise and are a bit over-processed which leads to a reduction in details. The camera struggles in low light and the noise is even more noticeable. The camera can record 1080p Full HD videos at 30 fps. The G42 also sports a 5-megapixel selfie camera at the front. The images are decent at best but look good with enough light. The camera app is simple and easy to use. There are a few modes and filters that you can use to spruce up your images and videos.

Battery Life and Verdict - Should you buy it?

The Moto G42 is a good all-around device with a good display and a decent set of cameras, but it’s held back by poor software optimization and sub-par battery life. The G42 has a 3500 mAh battery which delivers less than stellar battery life and might not be sufficient for power users. Overall, the G42 is a good all-around device for first-time smartphone buyers and those who don’t have a budget to splurge. The device offers good value for money and is a reliable device that’s a worthy addition to Moto’s G series. If you’re on a budget and looking for a good device, the G42 is a worthy option.
