Apple makes beautiful products. They’re the gold standard in terms of design, quality, and ease of use. But in recent years, the company has failed to keep up with the pace of innovation in the mobile market. That’s why sales have been steadily dropping. In fact, Apple is now in third place in the global smartphone market, behind Samsung and Chinese tech giant Huawei. And analysts say the trend is expected to continue. Apple needs to do something drastic if it hopes to regain its former glory. And the only way to do that is to come up with something radically new. But the company has been so focused on the iPhone that it’s neglected to come up with a truly innovative new product for years. In fact, Apple’s last really big hit was the Apple Watch — which was released in 2015. Since then, it’s been a downhill slope for the tech giant.

Apple is Losing Market Share

Apple’s share of the smartphone market has been declining steadily since 2016, when it was at 21%. Chinese competitors Huawei and Xiaomi have been gaining ground each year, and in 2019 Apple’s share of the smartphone market was only 14.5%. There are a variety of reasons why Apple has been losing ground in the smartphone market, but one of the biggest ones is Apple’s failure to keep up with the latest innovations in the industry. Whereas competitors like Samsung and Huawei have become leaders in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning, Apple has been lagging behind. Apple’s competitors have also been offering features that users want, such as longer-lasting batteries and more affordable prices. Whereas the iPhone has typically been the most expensive smartphone on the market, Samsung and Huawei now offer many devices that are cheaper than Apple’s offerings.

Battery Life Problems

One of the biggest complaints about the iPhone has been its poor battery life. Users often complain that their batteries die too quickly. And when that happens, they have to go to an Apple store and pay to have the battery replaced. Apple’s competitors have been offering phones that have longer battery life. Whereas iPhone users have been complaining that their batteries only last a couple of hours, Samsung and Huawei users have been reporting that their batteries last a full day or longer. With the release of the 5G network, Apple’s batteries are expected to have even less time between charges. If Apple releases a 5G-capable iPhone before the network is widely available, users will likely experience even shorter battery life.

The 5G Dilemma

The 5G network is expected to be 100 times faster than the current 4G network — and it’s supposed to be available as early as 2020. That would allow for much more efficient data transfer, quick photo and video downloads, and near-instantaneous load times for apps. However, Apple is expected to wait until 2021 to release a 5G-capable iPhone. Why the wait? It’s in part because Apple is behind the curve on releasing new technology. But it’s also because Apple lawyers have advised the company to wait. First, they say Apple should wait because there’s no consensus as to when we can actually call the 5G network fully operational. That means no one can say for certain when consumers can expect to benefit from the speed and efficiency promised by the 5G network.

Summary

In short, Apple desperately needs a new product — and there’s only one thing that could save the company: a truly innovative new iPhone. But Apple has been so focused on the iPhone that it’s neglected to come up with a truly innovative new product for years. In fact, Apple’s last really big hit was the Apple Watch — which was released in 2015. Since then, it’s been a downhill slope for the tech giant. The good news is that Apple has registered a range of new iPhone names with standards bodies. This means we can expect to see an iPhone 14 much sooner than later. But the bad news is that Apple has delayed the release of this new model until 2021. That means Apple fans will have to wait even longer for a truly innovative new product that might save the company.
